MY VIT JOURNEY: DREAMS TO REALITY

MY VIT JOURNEY: DREAMS TO REALITY

- Vagish Kumar Ganesh Kumar

College life doesn’t begin with classrooms or hostels. It begins much earlier—with pressure, uncertainty, rejection, and hope.

My journey to VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology) started in 2021, a time when entrance exams were deciding futures and everyone around me seemed to be running towards a destination. Like many students across India, I appeared for multiple entrance exams, dreaming of IITs, NITs, and top colleges.

Some colleges selected me. Some didn’t even acknowledge that I existed.

But through all of this, one dream stayed constant – VIT!

My initial connection was through YouTube vlogs, which transformed the university from just a name into a personal aspiration, connecting it with my own dream of becoming a blogger.

Getting into VIT felt monumental – a massive family celebration that involved booking two cabs just to enter the campus.

The real growth, however, began in the hostel. Saying goodbye to my father was emotional, but his parting advice became my compass: “Get exposure and make connections.” That night, alone with my pillow, I cried. It was the first time I truly felt the weight and excitement of independence.

Life at VIT is intense, massive, and incredibly diverse, feeling like a mini-India on any given day. You quickly learn to embrace walking!

Coming to the curriculum at VIT, the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) was a revelation. It gave me the freedom to craft my own timetable, choosing professors and timings—a unique liberty after years of fixed schedules. Academically, the system is distributed and rigorous, revolving around:

  • CAT 1 and CAT 2 (Continuous Assessment Tests)
  • FAT (Final Assessment Test)

While the intensity demands last-minute effort, the distributed evaluation helps manage pressure.

The second year was about growth outside lecture halls. I dived into technical clubs, including a blockchain-focused group, realizing the immense breadth of opportunities here. Many of my friends went on to utilize the Semester Abroad Program, gaining global exposure.

The third year was the turning point: I secured an internship with a Japanese company through VIT, earning a ₹60,000 stipend. This experience gave me international work culture exposure, confidence, and financial independence – a crucial source of pride for my parents.

Now, as a final-year student, hearing people respond to “I study at VIT” with a simple “Wow” still validates the journey. VIT provided me with much more than a degree; it offered confidence, leadership, a global perspective, lifelong friendships, and diverse experiences. It successfully transformed me from a confused aspirant into someone ready to face the professional world.

To all freshers and dreamers, especially those from a middle-class background: trust the journey. Rejections are temporary detours. Sometimes, the college you end up in gives you exactly the exposure and connections you need to build your purpose.

For me, that college is VIT!
