VITREE (VIT Research Entrance Examination) is VIT’s entrance exam for admission to Ph.D., Direct Ph.D., and Ph.D. in Deep Technology programmes across its four campuses: Vellore, Chennai, AP, and Bhopal. For the January 2027 session, applications opened on August 17, 2026, with the entrance test scheduled tentatively for December 6, 2026, in 25 cities across India.

VITREE 2027 Eligibility Criteria
This is usually the first real question students have, and it is worth checking carefully before you pay the application fee, since it is non-refundable.
Candidates must have completed their previous UG and PG degrees through regular, full-time study.

If your GATE score is a factor in your eligibility, you can check your percentile and validity directly on the official GATE results portal before applying. Candidates relying on a NET qualification can verify their score status on the UGC NET official website.
Don’t have a GATE score and worried you’re locked out of Deep Technology? You are not. The Deep Technology route accepts any one of a GATE score, an M.S. by Research, or an M.Tech. by Research, not all three. If you hold a Master’s by Research degree, GATE is not required at all.
How long does a VIT Ph.D. take?
This is one of the most common questions students have but rarely find answered clearly, so here it is upfront.

The minimum period is counted from the date of registration to the date of thesis submission. No category, regardless of full-time or part-time status, is permitted to run beyond 6 years.
Selection Criteria
Final admission is based on your VITREE score, qualifying degree marks, research proposal, and personal interview. Candidates who score zero overall are declared “Not qualified” and are not eligible for the personal interview.

What if I don’t have a research proposal ready yet? You are not expected to arrive with a finished thesis plan. The interview panel is mainly checking that you understand your chosen area, can explain why it matters, and can defend your reasoning. A clear one to two page outline of your research interest, the problem you want to work on, and why VIT is the right place for it, is generally enough at this stage.

In simple terms: if you qualify with GATE or NET, your monthly fellowship is higher across every table above. If you do not have a GATE or NET score, you can still apply and receive a fellowship, just at the “Others” rate.
Scholars can also apply for the Raman Research Award (up to ₹1 lakh for research publications), the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award for review papers, and external fellowships such as JRF from CSIR or UGC, the Inspire Fellowship, or the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship. Candidates must report to the exam hall by 8:15 AM, one hour before the exam begins, with a printed copy of the admit card. Entry is not permitted after 9:30 AM, so plan to arrive early, especially if you are travelling from another city.
VITREE Syllabus and Exam Pattern
The test is a 2-hour, 100-question, computer-based exam with no negative marking. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, and incorrect or unanswered questions earn 0. However, scoring zero overall disqualifies you from the personal interview stage.

How should I prepare? Since 70 to 80 of the 100 questions come directly from your qualifying degree subject, the most effective preparation is revising your Master’s or Bachelor’s core coursework rather than searching for a separate “VITREE syllabus.” The English communication and statistics sections are graduate-level and generally do not require specialised coaching if you have completed a regular degree program.

- Sign in and fill in your personal and educational details
- Pay the application fee of ₹1,200, inclusive of GST and non-refundable, through net banking, credit card, or debit card
