Why should you adopt an interdisciplinary approach in B.Com?

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) courses has rapidly evolved in the past few years with regards to the changing needs of the business world and the job sector. With the advancement of technology, B.Com courses are increasingly focusing on data science, machine learning, and AI, among others, apart from economics, entrepreneurship, and business concepts.

Business Process Services (BPS), Financial Technology (FinTech), and Banking and Capital Markets are some of the popular courses that are being incorporated into B.Com courses now. Each of these courses offers its own uniqueness and can cater to the student’s interest in a variety of careers in the financial industry. Students who wish to pursue finance as a career will receive critical insights into corporate finance, financial analysis, modelling and valuation with these three specializations.

One of the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to education is that students get an all-inclusive or well-rounded approach to the syllabus. For example, an MBA student getting knowledge of the Political Science and Environment Program helps him/her expand their horizons and not limit themselves to jobs in the corporate sector or getting into entrepreneurial setups. Students can discover new horizons during their teaching-learning journey. This will not only open doors to new ideas of understanding but also boost the overall personal development of students.

The collaborative approach is highly valued in India’s higher education system, under the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). Education should be holistic and transdisciplinary, according to NEP 2020. The Bachelor of Commerce is one of the three fundamental academic streams of higher education; the other two are the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts. There is a great demand for the inclusion of courses like Business Process Services (BPS), Banking and Capital Markets, and Financial Technology (FinTech) in the regular Bachelor of Commerce degree to meet the growing needs of the competitive business society and enhance the employability factor of knowledge seekers.

The Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree enables students to gain advanced knowledge and skills in accounting, finance, taxation, entrepreneurship, and marketing, among others. Students must pursue 10+2 with some compulsory subjects, including Accounting, Business Studies, Math, and Economics, to enroll for the B.Com degree.

A Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree with a focus on “Banking & Capital Markets” is designed for those who want to work for corporations, banks, stock brokerage firms, or as independent capital market specialists. In-depth understanding of the stock market, trade, bonds, commodities, and other marketable financial securities is developed in the course format. It is essential to have a working understanding of business and finance, as well as staying update on current trends in the stock and capital markets.

B.Com degree with a specialization in “Financial Technology” or “FinTech” prepares students for the future in the fields of technology, banking, and financial markets, where introducing blockchain and artificial intelligence with a distinct inclination towards the finance domain has become imperative. Students with a B.Com in FinTech have higher analytical, decision-making, and technological skills.

For a B.Com in FinTech, it is required to understand the various key concepts, business models, and technologies that are emerging in the financial services industry.

The Business Process Services (BPS) course focuses on the design, implementation, and optimization of business processes. Students learn how to identify and improve inefficiencies in business processes, and how to use technology to automate tasks. BPS graduates are in high demand by businesses of all sizes, and can find jobs in a variety of industries, including finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, among others.
